Totally Tots- Nursery Rhymes

I tried a new approach today using small carpet squares in an attempt to motivate our little ones to stay seated. Some were excited and grabbed the carpet square right away others not so much.  Our Pre-school librarian is using them as well because both our groups have lots of wiggles.  I am not sure that my theme today resonated with the kids as much as I had hoped it would, in all honesty I am not a big nursery rhyme fan and that maybe influenced my engagement with the books.  I used a big flap chart book of nursery rhymes and the Itsy Bitsy Spider flannel book I made with all 7 funny spiders. They liked the different names.  Dancing seems to work well with this group but the songs I had today were a bit slow for their energy.  Our books were:

 159565211058374Ten in the Bed

Humpty Dumpty and Other Nursery Rhymes by Lucy Cousins
Ten in the Bed by Jane Cabrera
Itsy Bitsy Spider by Nora Hilb. I made a cute flannel for this board book and the kids loved playing with the different spiders afterwards.

Opening song:  “The More We Get Together”
Wiggle/action rhyme: “Let’s Start Story Time”

Five Little Monkeys with finger puppets.

The Eensy Weensy Spider. We skipped this rhyme and instead listened to the song version.
The eensy weensy spider
Went up the water spout (crawl fingers up high)
Down came the rain (flutter fingers down)
And washed the spider out
(drop hands quickly down and out)
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
(circle arms over head)
So the eensy weensy spider went up the spout again
(crawl fingers up high again)

One Is a Giant- The kids loved doing the actions to this rhyme.
One is a giant who stomps his feet (stomp feet loudly on the floor)
Two is a fairy so light and neat (sway gently from side to side)
Three is a mouse who crouches small (crouch down low into a ball)
And four is a great big bouncing ball ( jump up and down)

Song: The Wheels on the Bus & Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Closing Song: “We Wave Goodbye Like This”
